Though immortal and unable to die from his wound, Chiron was in constant agony. Unable to heal himself and unwilling to continue living in such torment, Chiron made the ultimate sacrifice. He offered to give up his immortality in exchange for the release of Prometheus, a Titan who had been punished by Zeus for giving fire to humanity.
The gods accepted Chiron’s offer, and he was allowed to die, his suffering finally ended. In honor of his sacrifice, Zeus placed Chiron among the stars, where he became the constellation Sagittarius, the Archer.
